Seventeen passengers were killed while thirty five were got injured after plunging a bus into a ditch beside at Sattorkanda of Jhalakathisadar on Barishal-Khulna Highway on Saturday.
The bus was heading to Barishal from Bhandaria of Pirojpur taking overloaded passengers according to the information of the bus passengers.
They were identified as Tarek Rahman (45) son of Panna Mia of Bhandaria, Abdus Salam Molla (60) son of Muzaffar Ali of Bhandaria of PirojpurKhadiza Begum (43) wife of late MawlanaNazrul Islam, khushboAkter (17) son of Nazrul Islam of Rajapur in Jahalakathi, ShahinMolla son of late Salam Molla of Bhandaria, Sumia (6) son of Jalal Howlader of Bhandaria, Abdullah (8) son of Delower Hossain of Bakhergonajh in Barishal, Rahima Begum (60) wife of late Lal Mia of Bhandaria, AbulKalamHowlader son of late Lal Mia Howlader, Ripa Moni (2) daughter of Ripon of Mehendigonj in Barishal, Iren Akter (22) wife of Ripon Howlader of the same Upazila, Naon (16) son of Nazrul Islam of Rajapur, Rabea Begum (80) wife of late FazlulHaqueMridha of Bhandaria, Salma AkterMita (42) daughter of Taiubur Rahman of Bashbunia of Kathalia, Faruk Hossain (55) son of late KanchonTalukder of Kathalia, Saida Begum (22) wife of Rase of Bhandaria and ParvindaughterofMukhlalBaiyati of Barishalsadar.
The bus name was ‘Basher Sriti’ bearing the number of Dhaka BA 14-6549
“The driver of the bus was talking to the supervisor during the drive and lost the control over the bus when it is reached at the spot. Within moment the bus was plunged into the ditch.” said Jahid Hasan, passenger who was rescued and brought to the Jhalakathisadar Hospital.
The ditch was full of water and the bus drowned into it which caused the tragic causality, said FerojAhamed, the assistant deputy director of fire service and civil defense, Jhalakathi.
Local people rushed to the spot to rescue the people as soon as the accident was occurred, later the fire service and police joined the rescue operation.
All the dead bodies were handed over to the family members after inquest report by police, said Nasir Uddin Sarkar, the officer in charge of Jhalakathisadar police station.
All the injured were admitted to Jhalakathisadar hospital and many of them were critical condition, said Jahirul Islam, the civil surgeon of Jhalakathi.
Meanwhile the inspector general of police (IGP) donated taka one lace to the family of the seventeen dead bodies for taking them to home, said the OC.
The cause of the accident was not clear instantly and no case was filed connecting this, said the OC adding that a case would be filed connecting it.
